Calling all Scottish teachers! Learning and Teaching Scotland have just published a programme of outdoor learning CPD sessions. The programme can be viewed or downloaded from the Outdoor Learning Events webpage. Every school in Scotland has been sent a flier about these events.

These teachers are writing poetry as part of an outdoor literacy training session
There are over 50 different courses covering a whole range of themes including:

  • Local Woods for Learning
  • Bringing Learning to Life in your School Grounds
  • Using National Nature Reserves for Learning and Teaching
  • Outdoor Journeys
  • Bread, Butter and Biodiversity
  • Investigating Landscapes through Time
  • Wildlife and Waterpower
  • Outdoor Learning at National Trust Properties
  • Go Mountain Bike Orientation
  • Outdoor Centres – using residential experiences to delver a creative curriculum
  • Science Outdoors
  • Orientate yourself to Outdoor Learning
  • Bridging the Gap through Outdoor Learning

There’s more to measuring than meets the eye – participants on an outdoor maths course
In conjunction with Alison Drever, Building the Curriculum LTS Development Officer, I will be organising and running the “Why Outdoors?” course which takes place in Aberdeen, Stirling and Troon. There are separate days for primary and secondary teachers. To quote the course descriptor:

“This development opportunity focuses on practical approaches to learning and teaching outdoors in your school grounds and local area. Based upon a ‘Critical Skills’ approach, this CPD will be relevant to all curriculum areas and will provide a clear framework for planning challenging and creative outdoor learning experiences. Participants need not have any previous ‘Critical Skills’ training nor experience of taking children and young people outside as the day will focus on core concepts and learning and teaching strategies.”

How do we do this? Outdoor active problem solving is another Creative STAR course!
Chalmers Smith, LTS Outdoor Learning Development Officer and I will be running the “How Outdoors?” CPS events too. Again primary and secondary school teachers will attend on different days. Here’s the official blurb:

“This training focuses on strategies for effective group management when undertaking activities in school grounds, simple journeys in local areas or visits elsewhere. It covers practical strategies, clothing and equipment, health and safety and using outdoor learning to develop leadership skills. This training is aimed at teachers who may have little experience of taking children and young people outdoors.”

As well as the CPD events, there will be follow up activities for participants to complete and then share via GLOW – the Scottish education intranet system.

The courses are free to attend, but schools will have to fund cover and transport to the venues. Regardless of this, it is still exciting to see such a good range of courses being offered which celebrate the diversity and promote the possibilities that taking learning outdoor brings.
