Thursday 1st March was World Book Day. It is always a great opportunity to celebrate the joys of reading and what better way than to take reading outdoors.

We began by browsing a few books inside and listening to a story. Then Fred the Ted told the class that he wanted to read some books outside but wasn’t sure about good places to go.

The children are extremely kind and considerate of Fred the Ted’s requests. We gathered a special selection of small books that are easy to carry about. The first child took Fred to sit under a tree to read a book. As it was a wet day, he had a portable seat to sit on!

And then Fred got rather excited. He decided to read a book up a tree!

He was very proud of himself for having got up there with no adults to help him.

After that he had to try a different tree. This one was lower down.

But the next was really high up! Fred didn’t seem too scared about reading so high up! In fact I’m not so sure how he actually climbed up there.

Then he thought reading beside the water might be fun, even if a little wet.

The book was All Join In by Quentin Blake which was rather apt as all the children had to join in the fun of fishing in the pond.

After that Fred dried off on a bench surrounded by the children. Everyone chose a book to read before going back inside.

At each stopping point we sang a song relating to Fred the Ted or the activity or the book. All-in-all it was a pleasant way to enjoy books outside, with the children having more autonomy and choice about where we went, the books we looked at and the places Fred the Ted chose to read.
