Primary School Course

This practical course is designed to get participants out and about exploring and using their local area. Serious issues are managed through child-centred approaches which include stories, songs and games. This includes keeping children together when needed, following the Scottish Outdoor Access Code, defining boundaries, using landscape features for behaviour management and much more.

Aims:

  • To explore the local area as an interesting and essential active learning environment
  • To consider practical issues around taking children off-site and ways of ensuring positive approaches to risk management that focus on the benefits of the activity
  • To try a variety of simple approaches to exploring a local area

Duration: 1/2 day or a twilight session (2.5hrs)

Part of the training takes place outside, regardless of the weather. Participants must be prepared for this and wear appropriate footwear and clothing.

“All the course was useful. I’ve been given ideas about what to do to keep children interested and enjoying their learning”
Course Participant, Moray

Early Years Course

This practical course is all about taking children off-site to explore the big wide world beyond the boundaries of the outdoor space. It involves a short a walk to nearby greenspace where we undertake a variety of activities and discussions. The approach is based on encouraging children to develop a sense of place whilst having fun in a natural setting using natural materials available within the area.

Aims:

  • To provide ideas and activities that can be undertaken off-site whilst on a walk or visiting a nearby greenspace
  • To consider practical solutions for addressing concerns and issues to do with taking children off-site
  • To involve children in planning, preparing and ensuring they have plenty of free play opportunities

Duration: 1/2 day or a twilight session (2.5hrs)

Part of the training takes place outside, regardless of the weather. Participants must be prepared for this and wear appropriate footwear and clothing.

“I picked up so many ideas of activities to do while outside. I got good advice about any concerns I had with taking large groups out. I can’t wait to go and play the games!”
