Maths Outdoors Course

Primary School Course

This course looks in greater depth at number, money, measurement, shape, position, movement and information handling outdoors. It’s all about using maths as a tool to help us interpret the world around us! We have fun with materials available such as sticks, stones and playground markings to create enjoyable challenges and mathematical investigations for children of all ages.

Aims:

  • To explore the school grounds and local area as a rich context for developing maths skills across the curriculum
  • To consider resource provision and the practical aspects of developing maths outdoors including teaching a class of 30 children outside
  • To ensure that maths outdoors enhances and helps develop core provision throughout the school

Duration: 1 day or two twilight sessions

Part of the training takes place outside, regardless of the weather. Participants must be prepared for this and wear appropriate footwear and clothing.

“An excellent course with great ideas. All the ideas can be simplified to meet the needs of the children in my ASN class. It was great to share and hear feedback with others to get even more ideas. I’m definitely feeling more confident about taking the children outdoors.”
Class Teacher, Manor Park School, Aberdeen

Early Years Course

This course has a play-based approach to taking maths outdoors. Participants learn to capitalise on the outdoor environment as a stimulus for mathematical investigations. We look at ways of creating a maths-rich outdoor play space, the use of natural and cheap resources that facilitate mathematical thinking and problem-solving. We investigate the potential of stories for developing contexts for outdoor play and a range of specific games which children enjoy playing.

Aims:

  • To explore the outdoor space and local area as a rich context for developing maths skills across the curriculum
  • To consider resource provision and the practical aspects of developing maths outdoors
  • To ensure that outdoor maths is a natural and key part of the routine within a setting

Duration: 1 day or two twilight sessions

Part of the training takes place outside, regardless of the weather. Participants must be prepared for this and wear appropriate footwear and clothing.

“I found both sessions really helpful in providing LOADS of practical ideas to use at school. The kids have enjoyed and learned from all the activities I’ve used. None have gone wrong!”
Class Teacher, Milltimber Primary School

Bespoke Messy Outdoor Maths Workshop

Below is an example of a bespoke Messy Maths workshop put together for Grounds for Learning’s National Conference in 2011. These activities work especially well for mixed age groups and abilities. An interesting Golden Time offering, perhaps!
