This is an ordinary path in the middle of the Falkland Estate. It is also home to a subtle piece of word play art hidden within the drystone dyke on the left.
Solvitur Ambulando is the Latin phrase meaning “It is solved by walking.”
Whilst this advice is not a panacea for putting the world to right, it’s useful to reflect on why the act of walking does make a difference to conversations.
Firstly, if you are walking side-by-side, then eye contact will happen every now and then but not as often. This can be helpful for having open conversations. Not everyone likes to hold eye contact.
Secondly, a “netwalk” or “mobile meeting” can result in a relaxed approach where the conversations flow more easily. Whilst divergence from the topic is a risk, it can avoid one person dominating a meeting.
Thirdly, the fresh air and exercise can bring clarity and keep the brain functioning.
The words on the wall are all connected to acts of movement and usually that of moving forward, It’s a lovely acknowledgement of the diversity of the Scot’s language.
Finally, it’s worth looking at the work of Hamish Fulton, the walking artist for other creative ambulatory inspiration.
