This is a guest post by Lesley McLaren, Admin Assistant at Creative STAR. She wrote during a very snowy winter. We are waiting for another decent fall of snow and hope this blog post will inspire you to get out and play when it happens.

We had a huge amount of snow here in Aberdeenshire recently. Schools were off, roads were terrible and I was finding it hard to keep on top of shovelling snow from around the house.

With the snow piling up I decided to get my son TM involved in putting the snow to good use and helping me to make an igloo.

Now I’ve seen programmes on TV on the very subject so I had a basic idea of how to go about it. So armed with a plastic box, shovel and determination, we got building.

TM worked hard on filling up the box with snow and stamping on it to compact it down.

By this time the box was a wee bit too heavy for him to lift so I helped him out by placing each snow “brick” down, following his directions of where to put them (he was following a brickwork pattern).

It was hard work, but the igloo seemed to be taking shape. The tricky part was overhanging the next tier to start to form the dome. Yes we did miss judge a few times but caught the snow brick just in time!

Packing the gaps with loose snow made it a bit sturdier.

At the half way stage I lost my co-builder to the call of sledging with his Dad. But I was determined to carry on…

Ta Dah!!!!

Finally, after 4 hours it was complete! After shaping and trimming the inside it wasn’t perfect (and more of a cone than a dome), but it was actually very cosy and peaceful sitting in there.

TM returned to inspect the finished product while I went to lay down for a bit lol!

It was all worth it in the end though. But I think if I attempt it again I might involve a few more hands lol!
